The Great Candy Heist: 12 Tons of KitKats Stolen in Italy

In a crime that sounds like a movie plot, thieves in Italy have stolen a massive shipment of chocolate. The truck was carrying more than 413,000 KitKat bars. These weren’t just normal candy bars—they were special bars shaped like Formula 1 race cars.

What Happened?

The truck left a factory in central Italy and was heading to Poland. It was supposed to deliver the chocolate to stores across Europe just in time for the Easter holiday. However, somewhere along the road, the truck and all the chocolate vanished.

Nestlé, the company that makes KitKat, confirmed that about 12 tons of chocolate are missing. Luckily, no one was hurt during the robbery, but the vehicle and the candy have not been found.

A “Break” for the Wrong People

KitKat is famous for its slogan: “Have a break, have a KitKat.” A spokesperson for the company made a joke about the crime, saying, “It seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with our chocolate.”

Even though the company is joking, they say this is a serious problem. Cargo theft—when criminals steal large shipments of goods—is becoming more common. These thieves are using sophisticated plans to steal expensive items while they are being moved from one country to another.

How to Catch a Chocolate Thief

Nestlé is warning people not to buy these KitKats from “unofficial” sellers, like people selling them on the street or on random websites.

Because every candy bar has a special batch code printed on the wrapper, the company can track the stolen items. They even launched a “Stolen KitKat Tracker” online. If you buy a KitKat and scan the code with your phone, the website will tell you if your chocolate was part of the missing shipment.

For now, the hunt for the chocolate race cars continues.
